Wiring Harness Design and 3D Routing

A harness that looks right on the schematic can still fail at the build stage: connectors that clash, bend radii that are too tight, or a routing that adds weight and cost. Contrive Engineering designs harnesses with manufacture and maintenance in mind from the first drawing.

What we deliver

  • Electrical schematics and wiring diagrams
  • 3D harness routing in the vehicle or machine model
  • 2D harness manufacturing drawings (formboards) and bills of materials
  • Connector, wire and protection selection
  • Design changes and updates to existing harnesses

Tools

We work in CATIA V5 Electrical (and V4), AutoCAD Electrical, E3.series, EPLAN, Siemens NX, PTC Creo (with Teamcenter and Windchill), VeSys, SEE Electrical Expert, ZwCAD and Pro/ENGINEER, and have working experience with Zuken and Siemens Capital Logic and Capital Harness. We are equally comfortable in the customer’s own tools and PLM systems, such as Windchill.

Where our experience comes from

Our engineers have delivered harness and electrical systems work on programmes including:

  • Airbus (aircraft and helicopters): 2D and 3D harness design, schematics and wiring diagrams in CATIA V4/V5, including avionics and power distribution racks for the A330 MRTT and final assembly line harness support for NH90 and Tiger.
  • Jaguar Land Rover: electrical diagrams and 3D harness routing for the L460, L538 and X391 platforms.
  • Caterpillar: chassis, cabin and engine-bay harness design for the CAT 910, 914 and 920 compact wheel loaders, in Creo Harness 3D and Teamcenter.
  • General Dynamics (ASCOD armoured vehicle): 3D harness routing, schematics, bill of materials and power distribution, leading a team of 3 to 5 engineers and technicians.
  • Wrightbus: single-line diagrams and schematics reverse-engineered from existing harnesses on a hydrogen double-deck bus.
  • Northvolt: harness routing in Siemens NX for containerised battery UPS units.
  • Harland & Wolff: power distribution design, load calculations and systems integration in AutoCAD for the regeneration of ex-HMS Quorn, verified on board the vessel.

We support clients across the UK and Europe, including manufacturers in Birmingham and the West Midlands and Wolverhampton and the Black Country.
